Thrown & Altered!

Thrown & Altered

Transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Ready to move beyond the cylinder? In this 6-week class, you'll learn how to use the pottery wheel as a starting point for creating dynamic, one-of-a-kind forms. Through cutting, stretching, darting, joining, and reshaping wheel-thrown pieces, you'll discover how altering can add movement, personality, and function to your work.

Whether you're interested in creating oval platters, faceted cups, sculptural vessels, or uniquely shaped bowls and pitchers, this class will help you think beyond perfectly round forms and embrace new possibilities.

Students Will Learn:

  • How to alter freshly thrown forms
  • Darting, paddling, and reshaping techniques
  • Creating oval and faceted forms
  • Combining multiple thrown pieces into larger forms
  • Altering rims, handles, and spouts
  • Surface decoration to enhance altered forms
  • Timing and moisture control for successful alterations

Skills Required:

  • Ability to center and throw basic cylinders and bowls independently
  • Comfortable trimming your own work
  • Previous beginning wheel class or equivalent experience

Best For:

  • Students looking to expand their wheel-throwing skills
  • Potters interested in creating expressive, asymmetrical forms
  • 1.5 and Intermediate students ready to explore more creative approaches to functional pottery

Discover how a simple wheel-thrown form can become something completely unique through the art of altering. Every piece tells its own story, and no two will ever be exactly alike.
