Cone 6 Gas & Soda Firing

First Ever Firing in Converted Kilns

Fri Sept 27th - Sun Sept 29th

Friday Sept 27th 6pm - 9pm - Glazing for those who need it. You can bring your glazed pots to the firing on Saturday if you don't need to glaze.

Sat Sept 28th - Loading and Firing - 9am - 5pm (or until firing ends)

Sun Sept 29th - Unloading the kilns! - 1pm - 5pm

This firing is Part 2 of our Kiln Conversion Workshop. Participation in the Part 1 kiln conversion is not required. Students will receive 2- 3 cu ft of kiln space.

We will glaze our wares on Friday night. For those who choose the studio time option, you can start glazing your wares as soon as they are bisqued during your time in the studio. As this is our first gas and soda firing we do not have test tiles for the glazes. Most will look a little darker and richer in color. We are also aiming to get copper reds.

A good example of the glaze difference in oxidation firing (how we fire at the studio) and gas reduction is our glaze Panama. In oxidation Panama is a lovely turquoise blue. In gas it is a purple red. This is because of the reduction atmosphere (lack of oxygen) in the kiln.

If you’re bringing your own bisqued wares to fire you can also join us for glazing on Friday night or pre glaze your pieces with a cone 6 glaze. If you need to come in earlier on Friday to glaze, email Delores.

Saturday morning we start loading the kilns off site. As much as I would love to fire the converted kilns in our small parking lot I don’t want the neighbors to be too alarmed by the crazy potters. We will fire the kilns at one of our instructors' home studio, about 10 mins from the studio. The address will be emailed to attendees.

This amazing conversion Workshop will be taught by Jared Zehmer. Jared earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in ceramics from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He currently lives in Seagrove, North Carolina, working as a journeyman potter while creating his own work at his home studio and refining the skill of repurposing electric kilns into gas reduction kilns.
